MODULE 1 - FUNDAMENTALS
For section 3 it is helpful to have a good knowledge of physical and biological sciences. However, too many GAMSAT courses place too much focus on the learning of "facts" and not enough emphasis on core skills, such as how to rearrange equations or how to name chemical structures.
In this module, I will be demonstrating some of the fundamental skills needed for Section 3 including:
1. Numeracy Skills (eg. Log laws, Unit Conversions etc...)
2. Chemical Structures and Naming (eg. naming ionic compounds, IUPAC naming etc...)
3. Common Mathematical Models (eg. F=ma, PV=nRT etc...)
4. Common Conceptual Models (eg. Le Chatelier's Principle, Lenz's Law etc...)
This module is particularly suitable for students who are from non-science backgrounds or those who have not touched science/math for some time and need a refresher. Please note that I will NOT be covering an extensive list of science knowledge, because that is best done in your own time and the content is easily accessible anyway (eg. Khan Academy). We will be focusing on high-yield skills which I have found students struggle with in the past.
MODULE 2 - REASONING
In this module, I will be going through GAMSAT-style questions which I have categorised into 4 main groups:
1. Numerical Reasoning (eg. manipulating numbers and equations)
2. Non-Verbal Reasoning (eg. analysing visual info, like chemical structures)
3. Verbal Reasoning (eg. text-heavy questions and answer options)
4. Interpreting Graphs (eg. analysing info represented on graphs/plots)
My main focus will be in emphasising the reasoning skills (as mentioned in the official ACER info booklet) necessary to do well in Section 3, as well as teaching you specific tools to help refine these skills.
This module is suitable for students who already have a good grounding in science knowledge and numeracy skills, but are not confident in applying their skills to GAMSAT-style questions.
MODULE 3 - STRATEGY
If you have sat the GAMSAT before, you will know that Section 3 is tough because of information overload. You are bombarded with information (numbers, text, graphs, chemical structures etc...) in large quantities and the science topics are often very obscure. Even with questions that look familiar, the way the information and questions are presented can be confusing!
In this module, I will be demonstrating how you can use a simple 4-Step Thinking Routine, that will help to clarify your train of thought and be more efficient with problem solving. We will be applying this methodology to questions from ACER Practice Test 3 (the pink booklet) as I believe it is the most representative of the current style of the exam.
This module is particularly suited to students who are relatively confident with approaching GAMSAT-style questions but would like to refine their approach.
